SHARON

Sharon.

I continue to read through the never-ending articles that need editing. My eyes are strained, and my mind is foggy, but I need to continue working through the pile to lessen it. No matter what, I must continue working.

Sharon?

There’s nothing more for me to do but work. Focusing on my career is all that matters now, and I can’t afford to stop. No matter how heavy my eyes get, I need to keep on going.

Hey, Sharon, are you there?

My hunched back hurts like hell, and my migraine seems to be increasing with every passing moment. I understand how my fingers are aching, but how come my knees feel like they’ve run a marathon? Despite all this though, nothing can compare to the pain I’ve had to face that night…

“Sharon, hey, wake up,” a pair of fingers are snapping in front of me.

I jump from my chair as my consciousness returns to my body. I look to the side to see that the CEO’s secretary is calling me.

“Hey, I’ve been calling you but you’ve just been staring mesmerized at the screen.”

“Oh, have I? I didn’t notice,” I lean back, breathing deeply.

“I’m not surprised though. You’re wearing the same clothes you wore yesterday.” She places her hand on my head. “Did you even go home?”

As I rub my weary eyes, I get a sense of comfort from her touch. After taking a moment to fully wake myself, I finally answer her.

“No, I didn’t,” I slump down my chair again.

“Geez, Sharon, you should get some rest.” She stands up and begins to massage my shoulders

“I suppose.” My tense shoulders slowly ease from her careful ministrations. “Anyway, do you need anything?”

“Oh right.” She stops massaging and stands in front of my desk. “The CEO wants to talk to you about something really quick. Seems quite excited, too.”

She wiggles her eyebrows at me, piquing my interest. What could the CEO want with me?

“Anyway, I’ve done my duty. Toodles!” She walks back toward the door. “Oh and, Sharon?”

“Yeah?”

“Try to take care of yourself more.” She looks at me with concerned eyes.

“I will. Thank you.” I stand from my chair, and head to the CEO’s office.

I shamble through the hallways like a zombie. Lucky for me, the office reeks of coffee. The odor is enough to wake my senses and prevent me from collapsing to the floor.

I feel a huge sense of accomplishment at not getting lost when I finally arrive at my destination. I take a deep breath and reach for the door. I can’t tell whether my heart is palpitating from nerves or lack of sleep.

James Stryker, the CEO of our company, is a straightforward guy. While he’s quite approachable and outgoing during company events, most of the time, he keeps a stoic expression on his face. So, his huge smile as I enter the office is unsettling, to say the least.

“Come in, Ms. Flint, please,” he extends his hand toward the seat in front of his desk. “Take a seat. I’ve been wanting to talk to you.
